Krishna Jayanthi (Janmashtami)



Krishna Janmashtami also known as Krishnashtami GokulashtamiAshtami RohiniSrikrishna JayantiSree Jayanthi or sometimes merely as Janmashtami, is a Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Krishna.
Krishna Janmashtami is observed on the Ashtami tithi, the eighth day of the Krishna Paksha of the Tamil month of Avani (Bhadrapada in the Hindu calendar), on the Rohini Nakshatra. The festival always falls within mid-August to mid-September .
An idol of Krishna ( if not available a picture will do) is placed on a small platform (palagai) bedecked with flowers and the idol is decorated with flower garlands, gold ornaments etc. 

It is customary in most of the homes in South India that the entrance of the home is decoarted with 'makolam' and a pair of small feet drawn depicting Lord Krishna's foot prints into the home. 
Pooja starting from shodapasaram is performed followed by Sri Krishna ashtohram using Tulsi leaves, and various fragrant flowers. At the end, neivaethyam of delicacies such as seedai, vella seedai, Murukku, Pal Payasam, milk, curd, aval and various fruits are offered.
