Avarakkai kootu - Pathiyam (Diet)for new mothers

This is a very safe and healthy dish that is given to new mothers as 'pathiyam' (safe diet)

  1. Broad Beans or Avarakkai             1/2 kilograms
  2. Toor Dal  or Moong dal cooked    1/2 to 1 cup
  3. Urad dal                                         2 teaspoon
  4. Black peppers                                1 teaspoon
  5. Jeera                                               1 teaspoon
  6. Hing                                               a pinch
  7. Mustard seeds                                1 teaspoon
  8. Curry Leaves                                 a few
  9. Salt                                                 to taste
Preparation: (Easy method)
  1. Using a few drops of oil and roast the urad dal, black peppers and jeera, till the dal turns to golden brown.
  2. Grind the above along with coconut.
  3. Using a pressure cooker put in the cut beans ,add the dal, the ground paste,hing powder and pressure cook for 5 minutes.
  4. Season with mustard seeds and serve hot.
You can use the same procedure for preparing poricha kootu using 'Pudalangai' ( snake gourd ),
