Vengaya Thuvayal - Onion Chutney

சின்ன வெங்காய துவையல்

  1. Small onions ( Shallots) - 2 cups ( peeled)
  2. Tomato - 4
  3. Red Chillies - 10 
  4. Garlic - 1/2 clove ( optional)
  5. Tamarind - a pinch
  6. Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
  7. Salt to taste
  1. Grind the peeled raw small onions to a fine paste ( without using any water). Keep aside.
  2. Grind the red chilles, tomato, garlic ( optional), tamarind, salt together.
  3. In a kadai using one spoon of oil add the mustard seeds.
  4. After it splutters, pour in the onion paste.Let it cook in the oil for a few minutes.
  5. Then add tomato, chilli pulp. Stir well.
  6. Cook till the raw smell of onion goes.
This goes well with idlis, dosas and rotis.

Adding tomato is optional. This adds to color and a tangy taste. If you prefer the hot and pungent flavor of the onions do not add tomatoes.
